In Search of Raindrop Cake – Yamagoya | London : A review

Yamagoya is located at Shaftebury Avenue a limited time pop up residency above Shuang Shuang a hot pot restaurant. The closest tube station is Piccadilly Circus.

Yamagoya

Yamagoya is known for its Ramen but I went in search of Raindrop Cake. We were seated immediately my husband and I ordered White Grape Ice Tea because as it was a warm day in London. The drink was very different and refreshing for the heat wave.

For starters we ordered Gyoza – Fried Pork Dumpling and Chicken kara-Age – Japanese Style Fired Chicken thigh and yuzu mayo. We especially like the chicken kara age the batter was light, crispy and the meat very succulent and moist perfect.

When we ordered main we were informed that the Raindrop Cake is served only if we ordered Ramen or Chicken Kara-age curry rice (Chicken cutlet, house special curry and japanese rice). They make a limited portion of the cake per day.

We went ahead and ordered Chashu Don – Glazed Chashu, spring onion and Japanese rice made out of pork and Oyako Ramen Chicken Bone Broth, chicken chashu, marinated burford brown egg ,wood ear mushroom, wakame seaweed, bamboo shoot and spring onion.

The broth of the ramen was good but the highlight of the mains was the Chashu Don the smoky and sweet flavour of the dish was sublime and I would definitely recommend the dish.

When the Raindrop Cake arrived it was a clear jelly with hints of tea which you hardly notice served with molasses and roasted soybean powder. The molasses and soybean powder gives it some crunch and sweetness. If you have a sweet tooth I would not recommend this dish as pudding was more of a palate cleanser. It was one of the dishes that you have to try once.
