Hidden Garden in London – A visit to Fulham Palace Walled Garden

It was an early morning visit to Fulham Palace located a short walk from Putney Bridge Underground Station. I would have passed this Putney Bridge so many times in the past and never knew there was a palace or walled garden here. I was so intrigued when I received the invite from Instagramers London that I had to go.

A bit of History and Future Plans

Fulham Palace is home of the Bishops of London purchased in AD 704 which served as country retreat for the bishops and their families before becoming the bishop’s permanent residence in the early 20th century. There is so much history here and with the help of Heritage Lottery Fund and other sources, Fulham Palace trust is embarking on £3.8 million three year restoration project if you are interested in volunteering they have number of ways to do that. It is truly about the community and to preserve the heritage for the future generations to enjoy.

The Walled Garden

We were welcomed by the team at Fulham Palace and the current Head Gardener Lucy Hart who has experience working in Kew Royal Botanical Garden.

Fulham Palace and Hidden Walled Garden

The historic walled garden was built between 1766 and 1768 by renowned architect Stiff Leadbetter for Bishop Terrick. The garden underwent a major restoration in 2011-2012 and the original knot garden design was reinstated, the colours inspired by Bishop Blomfield’s coat of Arms – red, blue and yellow.

When I walked into the Tudor Gate entrance I was welcomed with curves of wisteria which is more than 150 years old, the oldest in London a beautiful sight can you imagine when they are in full bloom the whole walled garden to be wrapped in these beautiful flowers so I make a mental note to visit then.

Against the wall you can find metal framed glass greenhouse housing vegetables and herbs which is part of volunteer run Market Barrow and can be brought on sale days.

The garden besides growing vegetable have an amazing apple orchard housing five bee hives which produces an award winning honey and one can also learn to be a bee keeper here. There are three Tudor bee boles I am not posting a photo of them but I will leave it to you to discover and enjoy spotting them.

Lavender Farm | Day Trips from London

Don’t have time to visit Provence in France not to worry we have few Lavender Farms located just a train ride or short drive from London.

It is that time of the year again where the fields turn purple; while you are there you can eat or sip on great produce right from the farm or buy few souvenirs to take with you back home.

Hitchin Lavender

Located in Hitchin, Hertfordshire is working farm open to the public. You can not only walk among the fields but you can pick your lavender for a small entry fee. They have some tasty cupcakes and lavender lemonade in the café. Towards late summer you can visit the farm to see rows of sunflower. What I like about the farm the rows of lavender almost merge with sky and perfect for picnics.

Top Tip keep an eye on their social media page where they announce late evening opening, a perfect way to watch the sunset with very few visitors.

Cotswold is known for his postcard perfect villages but overlooking Cotswold Hills is Cotswold Lavender. The farm is nestled in beautiful landscape picture perfect and they not only have lavender farm but a large wildflower meadow filled with rainbow of colours. I would highly recommend their sparkling lavender lemonade which is really refreshing after a walk in the farm.

The breakfast is served between 8.30 and 9.30 in the sun room which has a great view of the mountains and sea. A cold buffet with various fruits, yoghurt, juices and cornflakes is available at your comfort. The main course is prepared by Neal while Jason mans the front of the house. You have wide range of choices from full English, warm croissants and pancakes to eggs benedict.

I went for pancakes while my husband opted for full English. The pancakes were so fluffy and perfect with bacon and maple syrup while my husband found his breakfast equally good. The second day we opted for Egg Florentine a beautifully presented breakfast and tasted good.

Where to stay in Amsterdam

Keukenhof was on my bucket list to visit for a long time and finally it happened this year(April 2017) more about this later. When it came to choosing place to stay we narrowed it down to Hilton Schipol as it is was all about Location Location Location.

The location was ideal to and from airport with handy walkalator to the hotel from the airport. A good travel connection to the city centre, direct buses are available from the airport to Keunkenhof, the ease to take day trips to nearby towns.

We booked via booking.com website. The hotel is modern, equipped with restaurants, bar, spa and a gym.

The rooms were modern, spacious and comfortable. The bed was massive and one of the most comfortable one I have slept in after a day out and about. Waking up to sunrise like in the photo and airplanes taking off was fab. The room has all the amenities with good in room Wi-Fi connection.

The breakfast was included with our stay. The choice was plentiful with a live counter for waffles, pancakes and eggs. Top Tip – arrive early to avoid the crowd as it gets really busy.

A good selection of food is available for in-room service for a small fee. The service was quick and smooth and food  so delicious we ordered some mushroom soup, fries and a pizza which was filling and fresh.

We opted for a spa evening on our last day for foot reflexology. Esme, the therapist at the spa had a magic touch, it is what we needed a good spa day and restful sleep before the journey back home. Tip – Book an appointment so that you are not disappointed.

Hilton Schipol Amsterdam

A special thanks to Melissa at the reception though we had an initial hiccup with our bookings she sorted everything out for us which made our stay smooth and memorable experience. It is people who run the place make your stay special otherwise it just rooms with bricks.

Cornwall | England – Where to eat with a View

There is nothing like a bright and sunny day in Cornwall where the water turns turquoise green. This post is about taking that view with some tasty food. Here is list that covers from breakfast to dinner with some scenic beauty that Cornwall has to offer. An additional bonus is that you can cover them all in a day while you take in the sights.

Cornwall Where to eat with a view cover

A full English breakfast at Godolphin Arms Restaurant with a view of St Michael’s Mount. By the time you finish your breakfast and cuppa it would be time for low tide you could just walk to the mount. I would recommend booking in advance to reserve the best table in the house.

A small café called Chapel Rock near St Michael’s Mount to take in the elevated view. A perfect spot for light lunch on your way back from the mount, they have a range of locally sourced food.

Afternoon Tea

What would be a visit to Cornwall without Cornish cream teas; I got that covered here at Minack Theatre with paradise view of Porthcurno beach.

The dinner is  a fine dining experience at The Alba Restaurant and Bar Old Lifeboat House just to wrap the day with view of St Ives Harbour watching the sun go down and the boats arriving inland. I would recommend booking at the restaurant as it gets really busy.

Treglyn Cottage Cornwall – An experience with Air BnB

A quaint cottage ideally located near Minack Theatre and gorgeous Porthcurno Beach located just a few minutes’ drive away.

Porthcurno Beach -Cornwall-England-UK

About The Cottage

The first thing that struck us, while arriving to the cottage on how calm and quiet it was though it was surrounded by cottages, everything was just still  surrounded by canopy of trees.

We were welcomed by our host Charles a Fine Art Photographer who lives stones throwaway from the property. The entry leads to the garden which is equipped with barbeque for outdoor cooking.

The whole cottage is divided into two wings on one side, the main door leads to open plan kitchen with dining area. The kitchen is well equipped and stocked with basic necessities. Tesco  is short drive away if you need anything else and an honesty box is located just outside the cottage which was stocked with spuds during our stay.

Above the kitchen an airy and bright en-suite bedroom, a reading nook overlooking the garden was massive bonus and waking up to birds chirping .

Treglyn Cottage-Cornwall-England-UK-AirBnB (2)

On the other side of the cottage a large but cosy lounge with exposed beams and wood fire burner. A further two bed rooms upstairs with a bathroom. This wing of the cottage is perfect for family with small kids you have separate spaces at the same time you can keep an eye on the kids.

The cottage has Wi-Fi which was very handy as you don’t have mobile connectivity in this area for emergencies you have land phone connection. This cottage contains everything at the same time so cosy and airy made a good choice for me and my husband for a short break over summer.

If you are looking to for a British experience of living in cottage with open fire places, aga cooker, and reading nooks this is place for you for any season in the year.
